Thibaut Pinot showed great form ahead of the Giro d'Italia and has looked quite sharp in it's opening days. He took the lead of the KOM classification with relative ease but remains in the fight for the GC as well, but reveals that illness has hindered him over the past few days.
"Thibaut Pinot has been feeling weakened for several days. But he has given everything and hopes to find his good legs before the race goes into the mountains. Come on Thibaut, you can do it!” Grouapama - FDJ recently wrote. The Frenchman has ridden to 38th in the time-trial, 2:40 minutes down on Remco Evenepoel.
Although he's looked to stay near the front over the past week, Pinot enters the second week in 19th spot almost 5 minutes down on Geraint Thomas. The time-trials have proved costly, but he's looking to do damage on the uphill. However he sets his priorities and believes that recovering the good feelings will be the crucial point.
“My main concern for today's time trial (Sunday, ed.) Was not necessarily the time I would ride," he continued. "The most important thing is to get back to feeling good, to be good in the next mountain stage and to have fun in the second part of the Giro."
He also sits second in the KOM classification with 50 points, whilst Gran Sasso d'Italia winner Davide Bais leads with 86. This could soon become his main goal, as well as would a stage win in his final Giro. His ambitions remain open for the closing two weeks of the race however they will be best suited to the Frenchman.
“The first five days of the Giro went well, but then I got sick. I am lucky that it happened to me at this stage of the round: tomorrow is a rest day and then we have three stages for the sprinters or baroudeurs. Although I can change my mind during the last week of the race. We'll see," he concluded.
