Edvald Boasson Hagen will not ride for Team DSM-Firmenich in 2024, as the Dutch team has opted to keep its options open on the final spots in its men's squad.
Boasson Hagen, the talented 36-year-old Norwegian cyclist, is nearing the end of his contract with TotalEnergies at the end of this year and has decided not to sign an extension with his current team, making him one of the most interesting names in cycling's current transfer market.
Last weekend, the rider was rumored to be in talks with the dsm-firmenich team. While GCN has confirmed that there were indeed talks, no firm offer was made for Boasson Hagen. According to inside sources, it appears that dsm-firmenich is exploring other options, keeping a position open for its squad next year.
The dsm-firmenich team has already taken significant steps in its renewal and signing process for next season. During the summer, they made a major signing in Warren Barguil, who returned to the team from Arkéa Samsic. In addition, Fabio Jakobsen, who arrives from Soudal Quick-Step, is shaping up to be the star signing for next year. The team has also promoted two young talents, Patrick Eddy and Enzo Leijnse, from its development team.
However, Edvald Boasson Hagen's current situation remains uncertain. Despite his vast cycling experience and impressive track record, the Norwegian has had a disappointing year in terms of results, with only a handful of top-10 finishes in races outside of the WorldTour. His last victory dates back to 2019, but his determination to race next season remains strong.
Speaking to Discovery recently, Boasson Hagen revealed that he turned down a contract with another team due to his dissatisfaction with the salary offer. "To get a new contract in a market like this, you have to be honest, and I've been honest in the last few months and I'm talking to a few teams. I haven't lost faith and I have some options. I've been cycling for a long time and I don't want to do it for free," the Norwegian rider stated.
Although Boasson Hagen did not reveal the names of the teams he is negotiating with, he mentioned that some have offered him a minimum salary, which he has turned down. His determination to continue competing in the elite of professional cycling is evident, and he will be looking for an offer that reflects his experience and ability in the peloton.
