An historical victory for Tadej Pogacar, who continues to add monuments to his palmarès. Out of all of them, perhaps this Sunday's Liège-Bastogne-Liège was the most comfortable, as he attacked in the saddle at the Côte de la Redoute to create the race-winning difference. He has also taken the KOM.
Besides being the best climber in the world currently when it comes to the high mountains, unlike what used to be the case until recent years, the Slovenian is also seemingly the strongest rider when it comes to the short anaerobic climbs - unless the gradient is quite shallow, in which Mathieu van der Poel potentially has a big saying against the Slovenian.
However the gradients at La Redoute were of around 10% for 1.5 kilometers, and in such terrain it was always going to be hard for anyone to grab the wheel of the rainbow jersey. It did not happen, and in the saddle Pogacar distanced his rivals en route to his third triumph at La Doyenne. Whilst only a matter of pride and joke, on the way to victory he also took the KOM at La Redoute.
In the 1.5-kilometer segment on Strava, he averaged 22.8Km/h for 3:58 minutes, beating the previous record of Lotto's Jarno Widar of 4:01 - done outside of racing. Interestingly, on the segment he was 6 seconds faster than Intermarché-Wanty's Louis Barré and 8 seconds faster than Giulio Ciccone who was the main chaser to the Slovenian by the time the riders reached the top of the climb.
