Remco Evenepoel will line up for the
Amstel Gold Race for
the first time in his career tomorrow, just two days after making a spectacular
return to racing.
The Soudal – Quick-Step rider had not been seen in
competition since Il Lombardia last October, but he kick-started his 2025
season in style on Friday by defeating Wout van Aert at De Brabantse Pijl.
Now, he heads into the 59th edition of the Amstel Gold Race
as one of the leading contenders for victory. Soudal – Quick-Step, a team with
two past wins at the Dutch classic, arrives with a strong and versatile line-up
built around their 25-year-old double Olympic Champion.
Evenepoel will be supported by Pascal Eenkhoorn, Pepijn
Reinderink, Itzulia Basque Country podium finisher Maximilian Schachmann, Ilan
Van Wilder, Mauri Vansevenant, and Louis Vervaeke. Can this team take on the
might of UAE and the rest?
“It’s time for the Ardennes Classics and we are going to the
start of Amstel with a young but motivated team. Remco showed that his form is
back and that gives us all a lot of confidence for Sunday. We have good riders
who can support him, and the fact that Pascal – who knows the roads – is here,
is a great bonus for us. We’ll try to be present in the big moments of the
race, show the Wolfpack spirit and fight for a good result, which we hope to
get at the end of the day,” said Soudal Quick-Step sports director Klaas
Lodewyck in
a team press release.Evenepoel will face fierce competition from fellow stars
Tadej Pogacar and Wout van Aert. Van Aert is still searching for his first win
of the 2025 season, while Pogacar has stood on the podium at every Monument so
far this year, including a commanding victory at the Tour of Flanders.
