Remco Evenepoel returns to one of his favourite hunting
grounds this Sunday as he leads
Soudal - Quick-Step at the 111th edition of Liège–Bastogne–Liège,
the fourth Monument of the cycling season.
The iconic Ardennes Classic will once again offer a brutal
test, featuring eleven classified climbs and nearly 4,400 metres of elevation
gain over a grueling 252-kilometre route. It's a race that rewards endurance,
tactical intelligence, and raw climbing power, qualities Evenepoel has shown in
abundance.
The Belgian star lifted his arms in triumph here in 2022 and
2023, with the 2023 victory made even more special by his donning of the rainbow
jersey as reigning World Champion. Now, he returns hoping to make it a
hat-trick, having missed the 2024 edition due to injury.
Evenepoel will headline a strong Soudal Quick-Step lineup
that includes Gil Gelders, Maximilian Schachmann – third in the 2019 edition – Pieter
Serry, Ilan Van Wilder, Mauri Vansevenant, and Louis Vervaeke.
“We have so many beautiful memories from this race and we
hope to create some more on Sunday, but we know it will be difficult, because
at the end of the day it’s a Monument, and one with a very hard course.
"The
team that will be at the start is a strong one and goes there with plenty of
motivation and a strong morale after our most recent results in the Ardennes.
This makes us really confident we can fight for a good result,” said sports
director Klaas Lodewyck
in a team press release.
