The crash came 57 kilometres from the finish, in the run-in to the Wolvenberg, during a tense phase of racing shaped by cold rain and constant braking through narrow roads. “During a braking movement in the peloton, a rider crashed fully into Vlad from behind. He was catapulted over his bike and landed on his shoulder.”
The impact resulted in a broken collarbone, with surgery scheduled in Herentals. The injury immediately ends any prospect of building momentum through Opening Weekend and into the core cobbled races. “He had good legs, but suddenly disaster struck,” his father added.
Van Mechelen had been set for a meaningful role within Bahrain - Victorious this spring, supporting leaders such as Matej Mohoric and Alec Segaert while increasingly being trusted with responsibility of his own. Omloop was intended as a foundation. Instead, it became a setback.
Another casualty in a brutal Omloop
Van Mechelen’s injury adds to a growing list from a chaotic edition of
Omloop Het Nieuwsblad.
Opening Weekend is often framed as a renewal after months of preparation. This year, the return to cold, wet Belgian conditions exposed how fragile those preparations can be.
For Bahrain - Victorious, the consequences are both immediate and strategic. Spring campaigns are carefully structured; losing a rider forces recalibration across the squad.
For now, however, the focus is simpler: surgery, recovery, and rebuilding. The hours and kilometres of preparation cannot be reclaimed. The road back begins instead.
