Throughout the early stages of the 2025 Tour de France, Team Visma | Lease a Bike have been putting the pressure on Tadej Pogacar, or at least trying to. On stage 10 however, they really stepped things up, much to the delight of team leader and two-time Maillot Jaune winner Jonas Vingegaard.
Bursting into life in the end of the stage, the likes of Sepp Kuss and Matteo Jorgenson were constantly attacking one after the other, taking the sting out of Pogacar's UAE support and leaving the Maillot Jaune a little isolated on the final climb. Although Vingegaard and Pogacar crossed the line together, the Dane is clearly very happy with the performance of both himself and his team heading into the first rest day.
"We were attacking to try and put some pressure on. And of course, if he would stay in yellow then yeah, he would have to do the podium ceremony every day. I think that obviously takes some energy, but we don't think about that," Vingegaard told ITV Sport at the finish line, explaining Visma's tactics. "We were just sticking to our own plan, and that was to put pressure on UAE today."
As for what, if anything he learned? "That we have a strong team, and that my legs are good," he smiles. "Of course it was a hard day, all day was really up and down, and super hard. It was a super hard day. But yeah, I'm just super happy with how it went today. Simon Yates winning and also my own legs."
"Of course I'm still behind, I have to take time at one point. But, so far this Tour de France I've been able to follow all his attacks, which I couldn't do in the Dauphiné," Vingegaard adds. "That shows I have a better level now."
With teammate Yates winning the stage, there was much reason for celebration, and in a separate interview with Danish broadcaster TV2, Vingegaard paid tribute to the Brit. “It’s absolutely brilliant. I’m so, so happy for Simon and for the team," Vingegaard concluded. “It’s always amazing when a teammate wins — it takes a bit of pressure off the team too. So yes, it’s been a really great day for us.”
