Joshua Tarling's tactics for today's time trial were simple: "Smash it and see what happens." 👊 Mission accomplished 💅 @Joshytarling | @BritishCycling | #Glasgow2023
Remco Evenepoel might have taken the win and the World Championships title, but 19-year-old sensation Joshua Tarling arguably put in the performance of the day in the individual time-trial in Stirling, finishing third.
"It's a bit crazy! It's just super cool to do it in the UK," Tarling says in his post-race interview with Eurosport. Just last year in Wollongong, the Welshman claimed the junior world time-trial champion so to now be on the podium of the elite shows a remarkable progression. "Australia was amazing but this is just next level."
The British national time-trial champion, it's not as if Tarling's capabilities against the clock were unheard of and earlier this year he became the youngest Paris-Roubaix rider in 86 years. The future is definitely bright for the INEOS Grenadiers starlet.
"It was tricky. My Garmin connected to the power meter on top of the car so I didn't have much of a gauge," he reveals. "Just smash it and see what happens! It was just about being patient, sitting at a good pace in that headwind then on the way back it starts to get more lumpy and twisty. That last climb is horrible, I never did it in the recon. When I turned left I thought I was nearly there but I looked and was like 'woah'. I think it went well."
