Twice previously Filippo Ganna has been crowned the individual time-trial world champion. At the 2023 Glasgow World Championships however, the Italian was forced to settle for second behind Remco Evenepoel.
“I am tired,” Ganna sighed to begin his post-race interview having lost out by just twelve seconds. “I've been in Glasgow for two weeks for the track and the time trial, so I'm happy with the result. I wanted gold rather than silver, but Remco cycles in a different world. Cheers to him. Remco is the man, I don't compare myself to him. He is both the future and the present,”
This World Championships hasn't been totally without success for the Italian. Ganna secured himself a victory on the track in the individual pursuit. “For me it is difficult to combine. On the track I ride a few kilometres, now more than 45. I can't say more about that, I now have to focus on my recovery for the Vuelta.”
Finally, Ganna had a word of praise for his 19-year-old INEOS Grenadiers teammate Joshua Tarling who became the youngest man to ever finish on the men's elite time-trial podium.
“Joshua is still young. We don't put pressure on him. He needs time," Ganna said of Tarling. "If he loses two kilograms of fat and gains two kilograms of muscle, then he is difficult to beat."
