Simon Yates has ridden a very strong week in Spain with wins at the Prueba Villafranca and Vuelta a Castilla y Leon, however today at the
Clasica San Sebastian he couldn't give continuation to those wins as he had to settle with a minor placing.
“I think this is the best result I got in the Clásica San Sebastian. And it's also the best result I've had in a classic in a long time. So I'm pretty happy with how it went," Yates said at the finish. He rode across the finale by the Cantabrian sea in sixth place, a decent performance however one that promised more upon the first decisive moves.
Yates looked comfortable and was the only rider able to respond to Remco Evenepoel's initial acceleration in Erlaitz, however was not able to keep up with the pace halfway up the climb. “I tried to follow Remco on the climb. I felt good there too, but I knew I wouldn't be able to keep up that effort to the finish. That's why I had to choose my own rhythm," he detailed.
The Briton rode in the chasing group together with Bauke Mollema and Tiesj Benoot after he was dropped by the INEOS Grenadiers duo, but then didn't have the legs to fight for the podium in the final climb. He survived the surge of the chasing group, but with a result perhaps lower than expected.
"From there I just tried to do the best I could," he concluded. Nevertheless the Briton took 140 points which will be important for
Team BikeExchange - Jayco's fight for maintenance, as he gears up to the upcoming Vuelta a Espana.
