Fabio Jakobsen’s difficult search for his former level has suffered another worrying setback, with the Dutch sprinter finishing outside the time limit on stage 2 of the 2026 Boucles de la Mayenne.
The Picnic PostNL rider was distanced on Saturday’s queen stage to Pre-en-Pail-Saint-Samson, a brutal 215km test packed with repeated climbs. Benoit Cosnefroy took the stage win for UAE Team Emirates - XRG, but Jakobsen crossed the line almost 33 minutes down on the Frenchman.
The time limit was set at +31:17, with Jakobsen the only rider to finish outside the cut. That means he will not be able to start the flatter final stage towards Laval.
For a rider who built his name as one of the fastest pure sprinters in the peloton, it is another painful marker in a decline that has become harder to ignore. Jakobsen is a six-time Grand Tour stage winner, having claimed five stages at the Vuelta a Espana and one at the Tour de France, while he was also European road race champion in 2022.

Jakobsen’s comeback search takes another hit

Jakobsen’s recent seasons have been shaped by physical setbacks and unanswered questions. After leaving the Quick-Step structure for Picnic PostNL, the hoped-for fresh start has not materialised in the way either rider or team would have wanted.
The 29-year-old underwent surgery on a narrowed iliac artery after struggling to rediscover his old sprint power. He has spoken previously about finally having a diagnosis for why he had been unable to compete for victories, but the road back has remained brutally difficult.
His 2026 season has yet to deliver the kind of result that would suggest a full return is close. The Boucles de la Mayenne offered another chance to build rhythm and potentially target the final day, but Saturday’s queen stage ended that possibility before the race reached Laval.
Jakobsen was not expected to challenge on a stage with repeated climbs over the Cote des 14% and Mont des Avaloirs. Even so, finishing more than half an hour behind Cosnefroy and outside the time cut adds to the concern around where his level currently stands.

A long way from his sprinting peak

At his best, Jakobsen was among the most feared finishers in the sport. His Tour de France stage win in 2022 was one of the defining moments of his comeback from the horrific crash at the 2020 Tour de Pologne, while his European title later that same year underlined his place among the elite sprinters in the peloton.
That version of Jakobsen has been missing for some time. Since his move to Picnic PostNL, victories have been scarce and his return from iliac artery surgery has not yet brought the visible breakthrough he hoped for.
Saturday’s result in Mayenne does not define his career, and a queen stage full of climbing was never his natural terrain. But for Jakobsen, the concern is the direction of travel. The issue is no longer just a lack of sprint wins. It is that one of the best fast men of his generation is now fighting to stay inside time limits in races where he once would have been looking ahead to the next bunch finish.
