Good afternoon and welcome to the liveblog of the 109th edition of the Giro d'Italia 2026. Today is a day of celebration for the peloton, with the brave riders rolling into Rome for the final chapter of three intense weeks of racing. After 21 days of battles, suffering and glory, the time has come for the great gladiators of this edition to step onto the final stage and receive their well-deserved applause. But before the celebrations truly begin, there are still a few things left to fight for. After the traditional photo moments, attention will turn to the battle for the Red Bull KM classification and, of course, the final sprint in the Italian capital, where the fast men will aim to close the race in style. Tadej’s bike was 35g under weight at the 25’ TdF, but his team added weights to ensure it met, and exceeded the weight limit. You shouldn’t have to, but scales are notoriously inconsistent, regardless of the professional environment of a world tour race such as the Giro. I want to avoid placing blame on the team here, because they shouldn’t have to do this, but pro teams typically build bikes to be slightly over the limit, often by 50-100g, to account for the margin of error between different scales (even the same scale). Surface levelling, wind, temperature, amongst other factors, can cause minor fluctuations. You have zero room for error if you build a bike at exactly 6.8kg. If the bike loses a few grams due to wear, or the UCI scale reads just 0.2% lighter, you’re in immediate violation.anonymouscyclist31-05-2026

- The penalty may seem very harsh, but this rule is nothing new, and the UCI are very well within their rights to disqualify a rider for violating it. At the end of the day, the only ones that SD Worx - Protime have to blame are themselves.
