Colombian rider Sergio Henao has announced his retirement from pro cycling after failing to get a contract for the 2022 season. Henao had been a part of the Team Qhubeka NextHash structure until last season but upon it's late disband, the 34-year old decided to stop as there was no other option in the horizon, as reported to Colombia's Antena 2 media outlet.
Having spent the golden years of his career in Team Sky, Henao has been a key domestique in Chris Froome's golden years, and has made a name for himself as a strong stage-racer aswell, winning Paris-Nice in 2017, aswell as finishing on the podium of Itzulia Basque country three times, aswell as achieving that result in Flèche Wallone, Tour Down Under and Tour de Pologne. Henao has also won the national road race title twice, aswell as some high-level stage wins throughout his career.
After joining UAE Team Emirates in 2019 he took a step back to a free role within the team, which was the case aswell in his final season as a professional with Qhubeka. Despite showing some good form, finishing 21st in the Tour de France, he was not able to get a contract for 2022 due to the unlucky nature in which his team folded. His final race was the Vuelta a España, where he abandoned during stage 19.
