Despite the hilly nature of the race, the sprinters weren't put into difficulties. Some attacks with 90 kilometers to go surged through but were closed down quickly, whilst in the final two ascents the pace was relatively conservative, with no team showing intent of attacking the race - having few riders dropped.
The peloton rode down to Frankfurt, where in the final circuit it was a fight for positioning into the final kilometers as a bunch sprint became inevitable. Intermarché and Bahrain looked strong in the closing kilometers positioning their leaders, however a turn of speed from Danny van Poppel brought
Sam Bennett to prime positioning for the final hundred meters, where Sam Bennett kicked and kept the speed to take a very important win.
Fernando Gaviria and
Alexander Kristoff completed the podium in the German race.
