Paul Magnier claimed Stage 4 of the
Volta ao Algarve 2026 with a composed and powerful sprint in Lagos, delivering victory for Soudal - Quick-Step after a long, controlled day for the peloton.
The breakaway was brought back with 25 kilometres remaining, and from that point the outcome felt inevitable. Tudor Pro Cycling Team, UAE Team Emirates - XRG and Lidl - Trek all spent time at the front before the dedicated sprint trains took full command inside the final ten kilometres.
A headwind on the run-in forced hesitation. No team wanted to commit too early. Positioning became increasingly tense as the bunch approached the final straight.
With just over 700 metres remaining, Tim Torn Teutenberg launched the sprint, stretching the field. Lotto Intermarché were organised behind, with Joshua Giddings guiding Arnaud de Lie into contention. Magnier waited a fraction longer.
When the road opened up in the final 200 metres, the Frenchman accelerated cleanly and edged clear, holding his line and his speed to take a convincing win.
Controlled finale, steady GC
Earlier in the closing kilometres, a crash involving Johannes Staune-Mittet briefly unsettled the bunch but did not impact the sprint contenders. The pace remained high yet measured, shaped by the headwind and the wide, fast roads into Lagos.
Crucially, Juan Ayuso stayed near the front throughout the finale and safely retained the yellow jersey ahead of the race’s concluding stage. There were no time gaps among the overall contenders.
For Magnier, the victory reinforces his status as one of the sharpest finishers in the race. For the general classification, everything now points towards a decisive final day with Ayuso still in control.
