A large and diverse group established itself early, containing riders from almost every major team but crucially excluding any genuine general classification threats.
Red Bull - BORA - hansgrohe were content to let the gap breathe, controlling rather than chasing, with the knowledge that all meaningful climbing was positioned well before the finale.
The break survived both the Puerto del Oronet and the steeper Puerto del Garbi with a workable advantage. Behind them, UAE Team Emirates XRG briefly lifted the pace in an attempt to introduce tension, but the red jersey never left a protected position. Evenepoel remained surrounded, attentive, and unmoved.
As the race tipped downhill and flattened towards Valencia, cooperation in the lead group began to fracture. Attacks followed inside the final five kilometres, and a series of crashes further reduced the numbers, stripping the group of cohesion just as the peloton began to loom.
Garcia Pierna strikes as the bunch closes
With the gap falling rapidly, Raul Garcia Pierna timed his move perfectly. Accelerating from what remained of the break in the final kilometres, he opened a small but decisive gap and committed fully to the line.
Behind him, hesitation proved fatal. The peloton, led by INEOS Grenadiers and others hunting a reduced sprint, arrived too late to undo the damage. Garcia Pierna held on to claim the stage in Valencia, capitalising on chaos and hesitation rather than raw speed.
Evenepoel seals a week of control
While the stage delivered drama, the general classification had already been settled the day before. Evenepoel’s decisive mountain stage victory ensured that the final day was about risk management, not aggression.
He navigated the closing kilometres without incident, always present near the front as crosswinds and late accelerations briefly stretched the bunch. With all bonuses neutralised and no gaps forming, the Belgian crossed the line safely to confirm overall victory.
The result capped a dominant campaign. Two stage wins and the general classification underline a commanding start to the 2026 season, and mark Evenepoel’s first stage race overall success since early 2024. For all the late disorder in Valencia, the outcome never drifted from his control.
Garcia Pierna provided the final flourish, but the Volta a la Comunitat Valenciana belonged unequivocally to Evenepoel.
