Stage 5 of the
UAE Tour provided another bunch sprint and although it proved to be more chaotic than the previous day,
Jonathan Milan still came to the forward and confirmed his status as the man to beat on the sprint to Dubai.
The start of the pan-flat stage wasn't as contained as usual, as we've seen Remco Evenepoel trying to sneak into a breakaway. However on pan-flat roads this would always be a suicidal mission, that he did not go forward with. Nevertheless three strong rouleurs from the front group, which after stage 4's late catch, caused worries in the peloton: Gianni Moscon, Silvan Dillier and Nickolas Zukowsky.
The catch was made with 3 kilometers to go and the furious battle for the leadout began then, at very high speeds and with plenty leadouts having many riders present. The finale was not technical, but not a straight line as most of the ones prior.
This meant that into the final corner, there was absolute chaos with the sprinters lost amongst the pack. Astana then did a leadout, although
Matteo Malucelli was not in their wheel. But this increase of speed allowed Jonathan Milan to get in position.
It was a sprint that was launched from far away but the Italian rider was by far the strongest, and so captured his second stage win of the week. Erlend Blikra and Matteo Malucelli finished second and third.
