Stage 3 of the
Tour of Oman saw a difficult finish at the summit of Eastern Mountain and the overall classification has seen meaningful differences be created, much due to a late crash. In the midst of chaos,
Team Jayco AlUla thrived, and
Mauro Schmid took the stage win.
The started off with an unexpected presence in the breakaway. Despite already building himself quite the reputation, Baptiste Veistroffer,
winner of stage 2 and race leader at the start of the day, attacked early in the day to be part of the day's breakaway. This signalled to other riders that a victory could happen once again, carried by the Frenchman's big engine, and the front group ended up carrying a lot of quality.
Rui Oliveira, Jensen Plowright, Alex Baudin, Stanislaw Aniolkowski and Jonas Hvideberg formed the front group; as well as Quentin Pacher, who dropped early on in he flat roads however. The race would also go on without Sepp Kuss, a withdrawal due to illness. The peloton had to chase the group quite hard then, and chaos began to take place in the final kilometers.
A large crash in a roundabout right before the start of Eastern Mountain, the final 3-kilometer long climb, split the peloton to bits and the race did not slow down - Uno-X in fact hit the front, going into the climb. There, Veistroffer was the first dropped from the breakaway, whilst last year's winner on Green Mountain Valentin Paret-Peintre suffered a mechanical and seemingly in no rush, saw his GC ambitions fade away.
The breakaway was caught with 2 kilometers to go as Jayco AlUla hit the front, trying to control a Nairo Quintana that launched several attacks. The work of Paul Double saw the Colombian caught with a few hundred meters to go, controlling the race for
Mauro Schmid who then launched his sprint first and managed to take the victory on one of the race's key stages.
Christian Scaroni sprinted to second right behind, whilst it was Martin Tjotta of Uno-X who rode to third. Adam Yates lost 22 seconds, still within reach of the overall win but with a more difficult mission.
