Tobias Lund Andresen celebrating victory on stage 3 of the 2026 Tirreno-Adriatico
Stage 3 of Tirreno-Adriatico was the first day for the sprinters and there was star-studded list of riders looking to fight for the stage win. The strongest on the day was the man that benefited from the best leadout as well: Tobias Lund Andresen, who continues his breakthrough season with what is perhaps the best win of his career.
Diego Pablo Sevilla attacked at the start of the day but there was no interest from other riders to follow, and so the Spanish rider led the race for several kilometers by himself. However there wasn't a proper hard pace throughout the day because of this, making the long, slightly hilly and rainy stage one where a regular bunch sprint wouldn't be prevented in any scenario. At Paris-Nice in the meantime, the race began to explode right from kilometer 0 with echelons taking place, and a crash that took race leader Juan Ayuso out of the race.
Sevilla himself waited for the peloton still with 130 kilometers to go, and from there on the peloton just rolled together through the following hours of the race. The heavy rain did lead to some tension, and at an intermediate sprint Isaac did go on to capture one second for the overall classification.
In the final 25 kilometers however there were some attacks as the peloton became awake once again, with a very dangerous attack containing Ethan Hayter, Jonas Abrahamsen and Liam Slock going up the road. Plenty riders attempted to follow however they were caught, and the trio was also caught shortly after. This led to a bunch sprint that was coming to light afterwards.
Lidl-Trek and Decathlon CMA CGM Team looked evenly matched in terms of leadout power, but it was Tord Gudmestad who led the sprint out with Jonathan Milan in his wheel. But the efforts of the stage became apparent in that final sprint as the Italian sprinter did not get up from the saddle as soon as he began his sprint.
Milan did not have the legs and in the slight uphill finale it was Tobias Lund Andresen who jumped from his wheel to take the stage win in Magliano de' Marsi. Arnaud de Lie and Jasper Philipsen joined him on the final podium.
Cycling has more exposure than ever currently and the big stars of the peloton face a new danger that comes with the large amount of fans that chase the riders during their training sessions. The amount of riders asking for pictures, chasing riders down, recording videos and even chasing them in cars creates a danger that Tadej Pogacar's agent Alex Carera understands and describes well. https://cyclinguptodate.com/cycling/some-people-even-chase-him-in-their-cars-tadej-pogacars-agent-agrees-with-jonas-vingegaard-when-it-comes-to-risks-during-training
