Tudor Pro Cycling Team are finishing their season on the best possible note, with Michael Storer stunning to an Il Lombardia podium, and this Sunday afternoon Matteo Trentin turned back the clock to take a magnificent victory at Paris-Tours.
A strong breakaway was formed early on and it included very dangerous riders such as Jonas Rutsch, Jordan Labrosse and Johan Jacobs who are explosive and well adapted to such a race. With breakaways having won here in the past, the peloton didn't allow the group to have much freedom - with the trio being joined by Kenny Molly, Hartijs de Vries and Oliver Knight. The latter would abandon the race due to a crash during his escapade.
As often happens in this race marked by the gravel and narrow roads, punctures, splits and crashes affected several riders, a game of positioning and luck. The break would be caught with 48 kilometers to go and the peloton would become increasingly small by that point, until around 40 kilometers to go when the decisive attacks began. Paul Lapeira and Thibaud Gruel would attack off the front as main favourite Arnaud de Lie and Jonas Abrahamsen both punctured, and with 18 kilometers to go defending champion Christophe Laporte would go on the attack. He was followed by Matteo Trentin, Stefan Bissegger and Lidl-Trek duo Albert Philipsen and Mathias Vacek - who would link up with the front duo only in the very last kilometer.
In the final sprint 36-year old Matteo Trentin proved he's still got it, taking his first win of the year in his final race and showing that age is just a number. Laporte and Philipsen joined him on the podium.
