Attacks on Challambra, but no decisive split
Inside the final 30 kilometres, the pace intensified further. Riders including Rosita Reijnhout and Ella Wyllie lifted the speed on the climb in an attempt to force a selection, while Mavi Garcia was particularly active both in driving the tempo and in contesting the mountain points on Challambra Crescent.
Despite these efforts, the peloton repeatedly reformed on the flatter sections, setting the race on course for a high-speed finish from a still sizeable front group.
Approaching the final five kilometres, FDJ moved decisively to the front. Amber Kraak and her teammates ensured Wollaston was positioned where she needed to be, anticipating the type of sprint that the New Zealander has repeatedly thrived in on this terrain.
UAE Team ADQ responded with their own organisation at the head of the group, with Garcia helping to set up Dominika Wlodarczyk, while Team Picnic PostNL worked to bring Josie Nelson into a competitive position for the run-in.
Wollaston times sprint to perfection
In the final kilometre, the group remained tightly packed and travelling at considerable speed. Wollaston resisted the temptation to launch early and instead waited for the sprint to fully open.
With roughly 200 metres remaining, she committed. Her acceleration proved decisive, and no rider was able to come around her before the line.
Nelson secured second place, while Mireia Benito completed an impressive podium for AG Insurance Soudal Team after holding her position through the technical and fast closing kilometres. Garcia crossed the line in twelfth.
Behind the podium, Mackenzie Coupland finished fourth ahead of Wlodarczyk, Sarah Van Dam and Noemi Ruegg, all credited with the same time as the winner.
For Wollaston, it was another statement performance on a course that suits her characteristics, and further confirmation of her status as one of the most reliable finishers in early-season one-day races shaped by repeated climbing and a reduced bunch sprint.
