The sprinters had their opportunity at
Tre Valli Varesine, the expected outcome but at the end of a race where the classics specialists did everything to disrupt this.
Jordi Meeus of
Red Bull - BORA - hansgrohe was the strongest by the end and beat
Nils Eekhoff to win the Belgian semi-classic.
There was an incredibly fast start to the race as many of the pre-race contenders out of the classics specialists allied to try and cause chaos and try to anticipate the hilly circuit where they could potentially make the difference. Jonas Abrahamsen, Florian Vermeersch, Alec Segaert, Victor Campenaerts, Jenno Berckmoes, Riley Sheehan and Jochem Kerckhaert... Other riders joined at different points, but the peloton had a very fast pace that saw these men caught.
A group containing Jenthe Biermans, Tom van Aesbroeck, Niklas Behrens, Joppe Heremans and Baptiste Veristroffer, but this was also caught with 75 kilometers to go as the pace was non-stop. The pace had seen a few important riders including Jasper Philipsen get dropped, and then a new trio went up the road including another UAE rider in Mikkel Bjerg, but also Pierre Thierry and Dylan Vanderstone. This was the group that ultimately survived in front the longest, but the peloton had many interests in the form of sprinters and other teams that wanted to, on the opposite side, attack. And so the group was caught with 10 kilometers to go as the pace was too high.
A sprint was inevitable, although it featured some uphill gradients and cobbles. Hence it was a little chaotic, but with a very strong final sprint, Jordi Meeus rode on to a strong victory for Red Bull - BORA - hansgrohe. Nils Eekhoff and Christophe Laporte completed the podium. A few of the main sprinters did not arrive in the peloton after a tough race.
