Primoz Roglic has arrived safely in the peloton of stage 7 and has confirmed his victory at Tirreno-Adriatico. Jasper Philipsen took advantage of the final bunch sprint and took his second win of the week.
It was a day with an uphill and difficult start. Although the main classics riders did not make a move, a strong breakaway went up the road nevertheless. Nans Peters, Valentin Ferron, Lorenzo Fortunato, Bruno Armirail, Samuele Zoccarato, Mikkel Honoé, Arthur Kluckers and Henri Vandenabeele went up the road and formed an eight-rider group which gave the peloton quite a headache.
With a high average speed on such tough terrain, the peloton never gave much of a gap to the leading riders. It was a move that proved very dangerous, which was being difficult to bring back in the closing kilometers. Only with 3 kilometers to go did the group get caught by the peloton, leading to a chaotic sprint.
There was no true leadout, but Alpecin-Deceuninck once again had Mathieu van der Poel close to the front and Jasper Philipsen who is a specialist in positioning took the cake. It was another big acceleration which led to a second victory for Alpecin-Deceuninck this week. Philipsen beat Dylan Groenewegen and Alberto Dainese to the line.
Primoz Roglic arrived safely in the peloton and has hence conquered the overall classification after a very successful week, João Almeida and Tao Geoghegan Hart completed the podium. Roglic also won the points and KOM classification whilst Almeida won the youth classification. UAE Team Emirates won the teams classification.
