It had been a long while since
Peter Sagan had taken a win at the highest level, and over a year since his last win at World Tour level. It has been a year wrecked by ilnesses until today, when the Slovakian won for the first time in
TotalEnergies at the
Tour de Suisse.
“I told you already it’s hard to get back in a racing mood after my sickness and three months without racing – it just needs time," he said in the post-race interview. Today's stage wasn't likely to end in a bunch sprint, however Sagan found himself in the position to be within a shot of the win.
Having gotten himself in third wheel, Sagan launched his sprint from the wheel of Alexander Kristoff and held the front until the finale. "It’s just a stage win, I’m happy for that and for the team, they did a great job on the front pulling all day. In the end I made it, and I’m just happy for that," Sagan added, satisfied.
"Well, it’s nice to be back," he concluded. Sagan will likely not have another opportunity to fight for a stage win during the week, however with the goal accomplished he will now try to get some more form from the brutal final days of the race.
