The end of the 2025 season sees several Australian riders' career come to an end. After Caleb Ewan earlier in the year, Miles Scotson on New Year's eve... Team Picnic PostNL's Alex Edmondson, the man who won the Australian national title the year after Scotson, has also announced his retirement from pro cycling.
"As 2025 comes to an end, so does my time racing bikes," Edmondson shared in an Instagram post. "It’s a sport I’ve given everything to for the past 20 years. Cycling has given me so much — lifelong mates, unforgettable experiences, and the chance to see some pretty incredible parts of the world".
He is a rider that like Scotson, turned pro in the late 2010's, but Edmondson followed a more traditional Australian route. He was part of the (now-called) Team Jayco AlUla project from 2016 to 2022, achieving in 2018 the victory at the Australian national championships with a solo attack. Scotson, a former under-23 Tour of Flanders winner, was a rider that also performed strongly on the flat terrain, often being part of the team's plans during the spring classics and in assistance to sprinters such as Ewan, Michael Matthews and others throughout his many years in the team. On the track, he achieved multiple titles early in his career, before exclusively focusing on the road.
From 2023 onwards, the Australian rode for Team Picnic PostNL, taking on a similar role for the team's many sprinters, both experienced and new faces in the peloton. The 32-year old's most recent Grand Tour was this year's Giro d'Italia, where he finished fifth on stage 18 from the breakaway, not far from what would've been a career-changing victory. Nevertheless, he shows thankfulness as he announced the end of his pro cycling career.
"A huge thank you to everyone who’s been by my side along the way. I couldn’t have done it without you. I might be stepping away from racing, but cycling will always be a big passion of mine. I’m excited to stay involved and hopefully give back to the next generation. One chapter closes, another begins. Adios chicos".
