Mark Cavendish has for the past few years been holding on to an illustrious and successful career, this one will come to an end in 2023. The Manxman has confirmed it in words given at a press conference in the Giro d'Italia's second rest day.
This information has been reported by Gazzetta dello Sport. The press conference - which was announced yesterday - hinted at the retirement of the Manxman and his announcement, which has now been confirmed. Cavendish has been showing his best form of the year during the Giro, coming close to his first stage win of the season on stage 11.
"I’ve absolutely loved racing every kilometre of this race so far, so I feel it’s the perfect time to say it’s my final Giro d’Italia and 2023 will be my final season as a professional cyclist," he told reporters on site.
Cavendish's career has been heavily marked by the Tour de France, where he should pursue a stage win this summer in order to try and beat the victory record of Eddy Merckx. That has been the goal that has kept him on the bike the most over the past few seasons and with Astana he will likely aim for it one last time.
Inbetween his 161 wins - with success also on the track - the Manxman has a world title to his palmarès, alongside 19 wins at the Giro d'Italia and Vuelta a Espana combined, Milano-Sanremo and countless other high-level wins throughout many eras in modern cycling.
