Javier Mínguez is one of the best sports directors in the history of Spanish cycling. He was Alejandro Valverde's World Championship title coach and now he wanted to send some advice to Nairo Quintana.
Mínguez, who has always been a very outspoken man (that's why he was a radio commentator for years), has analysed the situation of the Colombian cyclists, especially Nairo Quintana, Miguel Ángel López and Egan Bernal, whom he has defended above all else.
However, the former Zor, BH and Vitalicio Seguros, among other teams, believes that Nairo Quintana's situation has no way back and recommends that he should quit: "Nairo Quintana, don't race any more".
He speaks of injustice in the situations that both Quintana and López are living: "I don't think it's fair, I think Nairo is a great champion and for a silly thing that doesn't make sense he's been killed, nor does it seem fair to Supermán López. They have caught him in the wrong place and Quintana with something that everyone uses. I don't think the UCI are doing justice with that."
The advice he would give him is this: "Nairo has already done everything in cycling, why does he have to race and risk his life, at this moment I would tell him have a good trip and have a nice ride, I would tell him, look, don't race anymore".
He believes that the key is that the World Tour teams, which depend on the UCI, are not going to gamble by hiring Nairo because that could be detrimental to them.
