How far can Egan Bernal go at Paris-Nice? With Remco Evenepoel and Primoz Roglic at the start line, thinking of overall victory is perhaps too ambitious for the time being... But after finishing on the podium of Gran Camiño, the INEOS Grenadiers rider should aim for the same result in France.
“I have good memories here and it is one of my favorite dates. The only time I came I won, in 2019. I feel good, my body is progressing race after race," Bernal said ahead of the race. "This winter I trained very well and I feel confident that I will continue to improve. We will see how it goes, but I will try to empty myself."
Bernal seems to continue showing progression on the road and has, after finishing third at the Tour Colombia, ridden to third at O Gran Camiño - finishing only behind Jonas Vingegaard and Lenny Martínez. He's shown consistent and good climbing level, and is supported by a strong INEOS team this week. Furthermore, he carries experience from this race and the many traps it's presents, and has taken the yellow jersey to Nice in the past already.
Bernal was set to ride Strade Bianche, but his plan ultimately changed and he made the trip over to France where he is expected to lead the team. “The idea is to continue doing one-week races to improve form," he explains. "Normally, I would go to Catalunya, but it is a very tough combination with Paris Nice and it will depend on how I recover. This is one of the most popular races, everyone wants to win it and we come with a great team."
