The Mont Ventoux is one of the most epic climbs in pro cycling and over recent years a one-day race was created for the pro peloton. The Mont Ventoux Dénivelé was a success in terms of spectacle, however it has been cancelled for the 2024 season.
“The CIC Mont Ventoux will not take place in 2024. We are passing the baton to the Olympic flame which will cross Vaucluse and climb to the summit of Mont Ventoux in June," race director Nicolas Garcera wrote in a message shared on the event's social media. The race was created in the 2019 season and every year had winners of high quality. Among them Aleksandr Vlasov, Miguel Ángel López and most recently Lenny Martínez this spring.
The event would have it's end at the Mont Ventoux, one of the hardest and most famous climbs in the sport, having had the Tour de France boost it's popularity significantly. "I would like to thank our title partner, the CIC, which maintains its commitments to our side for the next editions and will be present during our general public events in 2024 which, for their part, are not impacted by the activities around the Games Olympics." The Olympic torch will pass by the region on the 19th of June, and the organizer adds that the event would take away resources from the organizing aspect of the race, which would make it impossible to provide optimal organization.
However this does not mean the imminent end of the race permanently, as organizers seek to have it back in 2025 and with the UCI Pro Series label, which it has acquired into the 2023 season. "We are proud of the renewed confidence of the International Cycling Union and the National Cycling League which allows us to retain the UCI Pro Series label, the second level of the professional circuit, in 2025.”
