Intermarché - Wanty - Gobert Matériaux are having a critical season in terms of working on their future, with superbly performing riders lifting the team's financial needs, who are having to let some riders go in order to focus on some of it's rising stars.
Mike Teunissen is one of the signings for 2023, matching with the team's ambitions in the sprints and classics.
Teunissen, a
Jumbo-Visma rider since he turned pro in 2015, will be making his move to Intermarché - Wanty - Gobert Matériaux this winter. With the team's successful focus on several fronts in the flat terrain, aswell as the domestic Belgian calendar and the wide cobbled classics season, the 29-year old will have a lot of terrain to show off his abilities.
The Dutchman, who won the opening stage and wore the yellow jersey at the opening day of the Tour de France in 2019, had there his best ever year with several wins. He's transformed into a key domestique for Wout van Aert in the sprints and cobbled classics, but will now be pursuing his own chances as he took a contract until 2024 with the Belgian team.
"...When the management of the team showed great confidence in my capabilities, I didn’t have to weigh my options for my future any time longer. The complete package is appealing. The structure and management is good and I was offered an attractive role for the spring classics. I want to shine in the finals and create opportunities for the team in the shadow of Biniam Girmay, who has already proven that he can win the most important races," Teunissen said in the team's press release.
Teunissen is currently riding the Tour de Pologne where he finished fourth on the opening day with an instrumental leadout for Olav Kooij's win, and he's been on the attack in the final ascent of stage three aswell showcasing his good form ahead of the Vuelta a Espana.
