He recalls his first stage victory. "It was the first time in a long time that a sprinter had a chance of winning the yellow jersey. Of course, with Dylan Groenewegen, we had a top sprinter in the team and had actually been working on this stage all year. We wanted to take the yellow jersey with Dylan and write cycling history that way."
He further adds, "After the finish, I did feel I had won. But still you start to doubt because it was so surreal for me. I had never reckoned with this. It came completely out of nowhere. Really an unbelievable day," said the Dutchman.
Teunissen knows he may never get to wear the yellow jersey again. He has framed his jersey in his hallway “so that I can look at it every day." However this season he got the chance to wear another leader’s jersey.
Teunissen was the GC leader after the second stage of
Vuelta a Espana so he got to wear the red jersey for one day. "I am eternally grateful to the team for that. The opening time trial in Utrecht was really special. Right after the start at the first corner, you come up against such a wall of noise. I had never experienced that before," concluded the Dutchman.
