Former Tour de France winner Pedro Delgado praises Remco Evenepoel - "He is very young, but his qualities are already very visible"

A great name in Spanish cycling history is Pedro Delgado. The former Tour de France winner continues to follow the current cycling situation closely and offers his insights whenever possible.

Spanish cycling has a bright future ahead with names like Carlos Rodriguez and Juan Ayuso. "2023 will definitely be a very good season for Spanish cycling. The scene is very promising,” - Delgado told Ciclismo a Fondo. He continues, “We have two very strong riders. Rodriguez and Ayuso are two youngsters who are doing great things. However, I don't think we will see them at their full potential before 2024. We will have to follow their growth closely to see if they have the qualities to win a Grand Tour within the next 2-3 years.

Furthermore, the Spaniard spoke highly of Remco Evenepoel's performance and praised his achievements at such a young age. “He is very young, but his physical qualities are already very visible. His choice not to go to the Tour de France 2023 surprised me, he chose not to face Tadej Pogačar and Jonas Vingegaard. Coming back to the Vuelta 2022, it's a pity that Primož Roglič has dropped out: I think the Slovenian would have given the Belgian a run for his money in the final stages.”

He is looking forward to watching Evenepoel and Roglic compete during the Giro d'Italia. "It will be very interesting, the two of them will definitely be the big favourites. However, today's cycling is certainly well-stocked with talent: we mustn't forget Egan Bernal. The fact that he may or may not be able to do battle with Pogačar and Vingegaard will be another very interesting aspect of 2023,” concluded Delgado.
