No wonder Matteo Jorgenson is one of the hottest prospects on this year's transfer market. The 23-year old American climber had an excellent spring and in a recent twitter thread, the American takes us through every little detail that helped him reach his current level.
"I can say now that I’ve spent every penny of my salary so far this year on my own performance. Between solo camps, TT material, nutrition, massage, and motorpacing; it all made me better and compounded on itself," he began.
Jorgenson continues: "In January I spent almost the entire month alone in an altitude hotel. I bought custom TT extensions with the help and testing of Ivan Velasco. I hired a nutritionist and have weighed and logged every gram of food I’ve eaten since December to make sure I’m always at race weight and adequately fueled."
"A special thanks to my coach Patxi Vila. He towed the line between racing and recovery in a way I’ve never experienced before. His ability to push my body towards explosivity for some races and then back to efficiency for others was truly impressive. Plus dealing with my constant voice messages and data obsession was a feat of its own," Jorgenson concludes the thread by appreciating effort by everyone who contributed to his progress; his coaches and team as well as his teammates.
According to most recent rumours, the young American should be most likely heading to Jumbo-Visma, while teams such as UAE Team Emirates, INEOS Grenadiers or his current employer, Movistar Team are among the interested.
Jorgenson kicked off his 2023 season taking home a stage victory as well as final GC at Tour of Oman, followed up by 8th in GC at Paris-Nice, suprising 4th in E3 Saxo Classic and 9th at Ronde van Vlaanderen, where was a part of group that sprinted for last spot at podium, to round up his spring with a very nice performance in Tour de Romandie finishing 2nd on final GC, while narrowly missing out on his first WT win in hilly ITT where he lost by mere 5 seconds to Juan Ayuso.
Matteo Jorgenson is now expected to take few days off to recover from exhausting spring campaign. Next up on his schedule should be Critérium du Dauphiné before Tour de France - his biggest goal of this season.
