"Isn't it logical that I'm a servant for Evenepoel?" - Ilan van Wilder content with his Soudal-Quick-Step role

Remco Evenepoel enters the 2023 Giro d'Italia as one of the pre-race favourites for overall victory. One of his key lieutenants, Ilan van Wilder has expressed his delight at getting his chance to aide Evenepoel in his quest.

"Isn't it logical that I'm a servant for Evenepoel?" Van Wilder questions and some notable Belgian analysts, including Jose De Cauwer had questioned his role at Soudal - Quick-Step. “He is world champion and wins grand tours and classics. If I were to ride for Jumbo-Visma, I would also have to work for Vingegaard or Roglic. If I were with UAE Team Emirates, it would be employed by Pogacar. Then I prefer to ride for Remco: a Belgian leader in a Belgian team.”

Having been a key member of Evenepoel's Vuelta a Espana support team as the Belgian took his first career Grand Tour win. “Remco is very grateful, by the way. In this role I also make progress and learn a lot. In the coming weeks I will ride finals in the Giro. And in the second half of the season there will be enough competitions in which I can look for my own results," says van Wilder. "I think that's a nice balance.”

“I really like José and I consider it a compliment that he thinks I have to subdue too much. But he needn't worry," he says in response to De Cauwer. "I know perfectly well what I'm doing with my career and I certainly have enough character to go for what I want. Just put that in the newspaper.”
