Egan Bernal has been lacking the luck he needs to get back on track. After a miraculous recovery from a life-threatening crash last year he's looking to return to competitive form this year, but has crashed for the third time yesterday at the Tour de Hongrie.
After a crash at the Vuelta a San Juan sidelined him for two months from competition, he returned at the Volta a Catalunya where he hit the deck once again. Both in San Juan and the Tour de Romandie the Colombian has shown great signs of recovery, but now at the Tour de Hongrie where he started as one of the favourites for the overall classification, he has crashed once again towards the final sprint with some consequences.
Bernal sustained road rash and bruising however INEOS confirmed he was to start stage 2 of the race, with the same time as most of the GC contenders as it was inside the final 3 kilometers. This will certainly have an effect on the rest of the race however where he looks to battle for a spot among the best.
Not as lucky was Luke Plapp, another big favourite for the GC, who crashed alongside Bernal but has shown signs of concussion and has been taken out of the race as a precaution. Both could be targeting the Vuelta a Espana later this year and so using this period of May where climbers are either racing the Giro d'Italia or preparing for the Tour de France so as to obtain some more results.
