Patrick Lefevere admitted that he had litle expectations on succeeding in the opening day of the
Tour de France, but
Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl Team surprised as
Yves Lampaert stormed to the win in the Copenhagen time-trial.
"I am happy that tomorrow [today] the newspapers will no longer be yellow for Jumbo-Visma, but for us," Lefevere told the media after the Belgian team took the opening win of the race. "What can I say? Nothing more. He's from my area, he's a farmer's son. He was second in the Belgian time trial championship, after Remco. I also saw that he was very good in the road race on Sunday , but in Middelkerke it was difficult. I know he can ride a bike."
Lampaert rode into a shocking win in Copenhagen, defeating Wout van Aert and putting on the first yellow jersey of the race which just about tops every other result in his career. "I think Yves kind of lost faith that he is a good time trialist because he was always beaten. But today it was fantastic," Lefevere described.
"I actually didn't have much faith in winning today, I have to be honest about that. We knew that Asgreen was not okay after his heavy crash [at the Tour de Suisse]. We all know Yves as a good, sympathetic rider. But here we got the yellow in the first stage of the Tour, for the first time in my life I am almost without words," the team manager added. The team set off for the second stage in yellow, and will be seeking more stage wins in the coming days.
Lampaert had expressed worries over the last months over a renewal with Quick-Step, however that is likely no longer a reason for concern after this massive win. Lefevere concluded by adding: "But after all the bad luck Yves had last year until the last Paris-Roubaix, he finally has what he deserves. I hope the contract extension will be in order, if those managers don't get too crazy."
