One of the Vuelta a Espana's most feared climbs, the ascent of the brutal Lagos de Covadonga could be making a return to the Spanish Grand Tour in 2024.
The last time the lakes around Covadonga were seen at the Vuelta a Espana was back in 2021. On that day, Primoz Roglic was the dominant force in the peloton, finishing 1:35 ahead of then-Jumbo-Visma teammate Sepp Kuss, en route to a third overall victory in the race for the Red Jersey.
According to reports by La Nueva España, among others, the infamous 12.5-kilometre climb which averages out at a gradient of 6.9%, however features peak gradients of up to 16% could be back on the race route in 2024.
In total the Vuelta a Espana has seen stages finish on the climb a total of 23 times, making it one of the most historic and memory-inducing ascents in the race's history. Alongside Roglic, past winners include the likes of Marino Lejaretta, the first winner, Pedro Delgado, Luis Herrera, Laurent Jalabert, Pavel Tonkov and Nairo Quintana.
