Primoz Roglic has made the switch to BORA - hansgrohe and the primary reason for the Slovenian's departure from the all-conquering Jumbo-Visma team is to complete his set of Grand Tour wins at the Tour de France.
“I like new challenges and trying new things,” Roglic says about his transfer in a conversation with Cycling News. “And no, those new things are not always better, but you only know that once you have tried it. I'm leaving the best team of the year, so I shouldn't expect to go to a better team now. We'll see what the future brings.”
Having taken three Vuelta a Espana victories and adding the Giro d'Italia earlier this year, just the illusive Tour de France remains to be taken. So with that in mind, why was BORA - hansgrohe the right move to try and challenge former teammate Jonas Vingegaard and Jumbo-Visma?
“I noticed a lot of enthusiasm for my ideas on their part," Roglic says of his discussions with his new team. "We had a lot of good things that we felt the same way about. Of course, I hope for freedom in the biggest races. I want to win, and go to the Tour with the best possible support.”
Roglic also realises though, that defeating his old team will not be an easy task. “Everything takes time," he admits. "When I joined Jumbo-Visma in 2016, we needed a lot of time to reach our best level. I will do my best to give everything to achieve the goals so that no matter what happens, I have no regrets afterwards.”
