Jonas Vingegaard is a generationally talented cyclist but in a very honest interview recently, he has talked about what his post-cycling life could look like. He may step away from the sport and the spotlight he admits, whilst also revealing that he could potentially pursue a career in carpentry, something he has a passion for.
“I have always said that I wanted to do something with numbers, probably something in the banking world. I have always been good with numbers,” Vingegaard said in words to TV Midtvest. However, that changed after he left college and became a cyclist in the World Tour, with his life changing dramatically in the last five years.
“After becoming an adult and renovating my own house, I have realized that I like manual work more than I actually thought". Interestingly, this connects to an infamous interview with his wife Trine that was shared at the same time as the Tour de France year began, where she shared details on doing work at home.
“At one point, we decided to renovate the house together. Jonas realised he could rip out a kitchen, install a new one and lay down wooden flooring. The team wasn’t too pleased about that," she had said at the time. This new interview reveals that in some way it was Vingegaard's will to do this work, out of passion for carpentry.

Pro cycling out of the picture once he retires?

Could this actually become his job after he finished his cycling career at some point in the future? “That could very well be. Time will tell. I am very fascinated by carpentry.” One thing he does know is that it is not likely that he will stick around for a staff position in the sport after he hangs up his wheels, as his priorities lie elsewhere.
“I actually do not think I will stay in the cycling world when I stop. I think I will just enjoy being at home with my family and being there for them," the Dane justifies. "Beyond that, I do not really know what I want yet, but I will probably figure that out.”
Lastly, he left a message for those who look up to him, as a rider and as a person. “I think I would just tell them to keep believing. It is not always the biggest talents who get the furthest. I was not one of them myself, and I have still come a long way. So keep going and have fun with it.”
