Time-trialing is a weak spot in the armour of Cian Uijtdebroeks. The Belgian rider had complains in his final race for BORA - hansgrohe in fact over the team's equipment, but working on that will be a major goal for Team Visma | Lease a Bike.
"I know approximately what he can kick and I think he should be able to kick a lot harder than he is doing now. That also takes time, because it is not immediately solved with a better position," Team Visma | Lease a Bike coach Mathieu Heijboer said at MOVE Amsterdam. In the current cycling bubble it is imperative for riders to perform in the time-trials if they want to fight for the win in Grand Tours. The likes of Tadej Pogacar, Primoz Roglic, Jonas Vingegaard and Remco Evenepoel - to name a few - are all some of the best in the discipline, and Uijtdebroeks will have to improve significantly if in the future he wants to battle it out with such names.
When it comes to climbing and consistency the 20-year old has impressed so far in every step of his pro career, but despite his strong power output he hasn't been a strong performer in the time-trials. In the recent Vuelta a España time-trial where he was aiming for the GC, he finished 2:19 minutes behind Remco Evenepoel in a time-trial of only 25.8 kilometers. The Dutch team is one of the best when it comes to this however and is keen on developing him as necessary.
"It's also about him building up consistency and training on it every week. He must become one with that position and learn to put power in those difficult corners," Heijboer explains. "He can certainly do better, much better than he has done so far, but we should not expect it to be solved with one aero test. That really takes time. That's fun work, I'm looking forward to it."
