Jonas Vingegaard skips World Championships to focus on Il Lombardia

After winning the Tour de France, little needs to be asked of Jonas Vingegaard after he finally succeeded in the team's long-term plan of winning the Grand Boucle. He will not be part of the Danish team for the World championships, instead focusing his attention onto other races late on in the year.

“Jonas Vingegaard will not be part of the World Championship team, as he has chosen to focus on other tasks with his Jumbo-Visma team," Danish national team selector Anders Lund said in a statement. Vingegaard has since his Tour win raced some post-Tour criteriums, but has not raced a UCI event.

Vingegaard's decision largely follows the likelihood of targeting Il Lombardia as the final goal of the season, and can also be justified by the Wollongong route which is not particularly suited to his skillset as a climber.

Four spots within the team have been decided, with Lund announcing that Jakob Fuglsang, Mattias Skjelmose, Magnus Cort Nielsen and Soren Kragh Andersen have a spot virtually guarranteed at the Worlds, with the remaining names to be revealed in the coming weeks. “The four cyclists have shown a very high level throughout the season. I am convinced that they will make a great effort on the tough route of the World Championship in Wollongong," he concluded.
