Jonas Vingegaard decimates competition at Monte Petrano and virtually confirms Tirreno-Adriatico win

Jonas Vingegaard was untouchable in the queen stage of Tirreno-Adriatico. The Team Visma | Lease a Bike rider performed as expected and won atop Monte Petrano; whilst Jai Hindley and Juan Ayuso completed the podium.

The queen stage of the Italian race began with a very strong breakaway going up the road. Team Visma | Lease a Bike paced in the peloton, but they had to contest with a group of nine: Ben Healy, RIchard Carapaz, Michal Kwiatkowski, Iván García Cortina, Julian Alaphilippe, Andreas Leknessund, Nikias Arndt, Axel Zingle and Nans Peters.

An elite group for the small climbs the peloton faced throughout most of the day, it cost a lot of firepower of Visma to keep it under control. In the front however, on the climbs that led up to Monte Petrano, only a trio containing Healy, Carapaz and Leknessund remained in front.

On the penultimate climb Healy was dropped and the duo carried an almost two-minute gap then into the final ascent. However the pace was unrelenting in the peloton, BORA - hansgrohe hit the front at the base of the climb, right away with a very strong pace. Daniel Martínez and Lennard Kämna's work broke the group apart...

Jai Hindley attacked with 6.3 kilometers to go, taking with him Jonas Vingegaard and Juan Ayuso. The unstoppable Dane then attacked a few hundred meters later. It seemed initially that he wasn't going to go solo but the inevitable happened. It was then a solo ride all the way to the line, Vingegaard won his second consecutive stage, now in the leader's jersey.

Second place was taken by Juan Ayuso whilst Jai Hindley finished third - just like the previous day, and in the exact same way sits the overall classification.
