Jonas Vingegaard is currently untouchable in the climbs. At O Gran Camiño he won all three road stages, and against tougher competition he has won both mountain stages with relative ease.
“The team was in the lead again all day, so it is very nice to repay that. For me it is also nice to win again. With two stage victories it is a perfect week for us," Vingegaard said in a post-race interview. "Now we still have to keep the leader's jersey in tomorrow's final stage.” The final day of racing is mostly flat, and the Team Visma | Lease a Bike rider should confirm his overall classification.
Visma did not have to push the pace hard int he final climb, as BORA - hansgrohe set Jai Hindley up for an attack. “They rode a high pace. At that moment we thought: that's good for us. Because if I wanted to attack, it was good if the pace was high." The Dutch team controlled the breakaway throughout the day, but then he was the one to make the difference in the finale.
"Then Hindley went, a few times. At one point I decided to attack myself. From there it was just a time trial to the finish," he said. Six kilometers alone, over half of the final climb to Monte Petrano. It was a comfortable one however with 26 seconds of lead at the finish line. A relatively simple story, Vingegaard was simply the strongest once again.
“I think I'm in better shape now than I was in the last two years" he admits. "I'm very happy with how things went here. I can also be happy and satisfied with how we rode as a team. It's been a super good week. Or I can celebrate? First tomorrow's stage.”
