Jonas Vingegaard wasn't as sharp as last summer, but he's shown a strong level during Paris-Nice which he used to ride into the podium. He couldn't improve on his position in today's decisive stage around Nice.
“If I had the legs, I would have tried something on the final climb, but he was really strong. I decided not to follow him. That is why I am happy with my second place today," Vingegaard said in a post-race interview. Unlike stage 7, Jumbo-Visma could not push the pace as Tobias Foss struggled in the descents and UAE Team Emirates looked more solid than in previous days.
The GC riders let it into the final ascent, but upon Tadej Pogacar's attack, no-one had the legs to follow. Vingegaard rolled through the finish winning the sprint for second place, arriving together with David Gaudu, Simon Yates and Matteo Jorgenson. It was a tough week full of racing for the Dane who ended 1:39 minutes on Pogacar.
“I am happy with the way I raced. Now I can continue to work on my form for the Tour de France," the leader of Jumbo-Visma went on to say. "Hopefully I can be better there because I think I didn't have my best level here. I still have work to do.” Meanwhile, the Dutch team rode to victory at Tirreno-Adriatico, where Primoz Roglic took three stage wins.
