Jumbo-Visma have recently re-signed with Christophe Laporte, but they have now consolidated their relation with perhaps their biggest star.
Jonas Vingegaard has renewed with the team until 2027 in what is one of the longest contracts in the peloton.
“I have had a fantastic journey with the team who has supported me in every way to become the rider I am today. I appreciate the quality of the team and the people here and feel at home," Vingegaard said in a press release. "Every day we push each other to get better, and this is where I can fulfill my full potential. We will definitely reach an even higher level together. I'm excited to continue growing within the team.”
Vingegaard first joined Jumbo-Visma in 2019 out of the Danish continental scene. That year he won a stage at the Tour de Pologne revealing talent, but one that was still in the raw. His climbing potential was very much still hidden and only began coming through in the coming year as he supported Primoz Roglic to his Vuelta a Espana win. In 2021 Vingegaard broke through however finishing second to Tadej Pogacar at the Tour de France, and in 2022 he took the utmost important triumph of his career by standing on the top step in Paris.
“The Tour de France is something very special. The feeling I had, standing on top of the podium, was fantastic," he continues. "My goal is to go for many more wins. In the Tour but also in other races to come. It means everything to me to know that I will be in the team for a further five years. It gives me peace of mind and the opportunity to focus on my goals even more.”
Now with the team until 2027, confidence and trust are as high as ever. The team will look to work on more Tour de France wins including this very summer, but more goals will also emerge for the 26-year old. He joins Jorgen Nordhagen in having a contract until that year with the Dutch team and the contract is only matched by a few other riders in the peloton.
Team DS Richard Plugge confirmed the team's hopes with the Dane: "Jonas is a fantastic fit for us: he is eager to learn and easy to coach, and also pushes us ahead as a team. He was a rough diamond when he first came to the team. Together, we developed significantly, ultimately winning the Tour de France. Jonas is essential to our goals if we're to maintain our position at the top.”
