Jakob Fuglsang has experienced an unexpected day, starting the sixth stage of the Tour de Suisse in the yellow jersey after Aleksandr Vlasov left the race with Covid-19. He kept the jersey safe, however his chances of winning the race have lower slightly.
“On the last climb, there was a quite a lot of wind, especially at the top there was headwind so it was difficult to do something," Fuglsang said at the end of the day. The final ascent to Moosalp was ridden in a conservative pace in the peloton, as little risks were taken from the main favourites. The Dane responded to an attack from Max Schachmann in the final five kilometers, however then the GC group rode a constant pace until the finale where the main climbers arrived together.
Fuglsang kept the yellow jersey, however had Geraint Thomas sitting only one second behind - and Stefan Küng at 49 seconds. “The time trial will be really decisive so it wouldn’t be bad for me to have a few more seconds on Geraint Thomas but for now, I’m happy to have the jersey," Fuglsang admits. As long as the 37-year old stays in the race he is likely to take very important points towards Israel - Premier Tech's tally, however he has a clear goal.
“I hope I can finish it off in a good way. My goal was to try and win Tour de Suisse. I have two third places and one second place in GC and I want to try to win it. Now I have the yellow and I will fight until the very end to keep it," he said. Tomorrow the riders will head into Liechenstein where the summit finish in Malbun will make further differences, and despite being in the lead Fuglsang will likely opt for an aggressive strategy.
"We will see. Maybe I have to attack tomorrow. If you feel good, you have to take every opportunity that is there. One day at a time, things can change very fast," he concluded.
