Jai Hindley didn't come to the Giro d'Italia as a main favourite, but taking into account his performances of the past and his current form, he has quickly became a very dangerous rider ahead of the Alps where the climbs will suit him very well.
Hindley told VeloNews about how the events at Blockhaus changed the team's approach to the generals standings, where the main goal lies. About his teammate Wilco Kelderman, who suffered from mechanicals before the climb and dropped out of contention, he said: "It was super unfortunate that Wilco lost that time because in my opinion it was better to have more options and cards to play in the final and it’s frustrating to see him lose that time because I saw the hard work that he put into the lead-up and he also had some bad setbacks."
BORA - hansgrohe nevertheless keeps it's options wide option. With Kelderman and Lennard Kämna focusing on stage wins and domestique duties now, it provides a more stable support for the Australian and also Emanuel Buchmann who's in ninth place as it stands. “It’s not ideal to lose him out of the GC but Emu Buchmann also showed that he’s in pretty good form, so I look forward to working with him in the finals of some of the harder stages," Hindley added.
I definitely take a lot of confidence out of the Blockhaus stage. We came here with a pretty ambitious goal of getting a rider onto the podium and I think we will continue to try and do that," Hindley concluded. He sits fifth in the overall after stage 11 and he will be looking to replicate his performance of the 2020 Giro, however with a different result.
