With Spring Classics getting underway with Opening Weekend, Matteo Trentin will be hoping to get off to a strong start with his new Tudor Pro Cycling team. The 34-year-old veteran is now in his fourteenth season and he will be hoping to put his experience to pick up some good results.
Much has been made of Fabian Cancellara’s ownership of Tudor Pro Cycling helping the team to gain entry into many of their races for this year. In an interview with GCN ahead of Omloop Het Nieuwsblad, Trentin said “for sure he helps the team receive wildcards to participate but now it’s up to us to show to anyone who has invited us and we deserve to be there, and that we want to be there in the future too”.
The Italian rider signed a three-year deal with the team prior to the start of this season and has already picked up a strong result, with a third place finish at the Clásica de Almería earlier this month.
On signing for the team, Trentin said “I’m very happy with my choice of joining Tudor Pro Cycling. Things are going pretty well for the moment and the season has just started. As you see we’re just setting things up race by race. The victory isn’t here yet but when it does come I’m sure that it will snowball and bring more”.
The three-time Tour de France stage winner will also have a role in supporting some of the young talent on the team, as he said that “I’m probably one of the only guys who have raced there. We have a bunch of young riders to develop and bring up through the process but we have to get results and develop. As they say you have to prepare the table before having dinner”.
After Opening Weekend, Trentin will head to Paris-Nice and Milano-Sanremo before returning to Belgium for a series of Flemish Classics, including the Ronde van Vlaanderen at the end of March.
