With the Tour de France over, the cycling rumour mill has sparked back into life. One of the most intriguing pieces of transfer speculation has seen Olympic champion Remco Evenepoel heavily linked with a move to Red Bull - BORA - hansgrohe. This has also raised question though, such as what this will mean for the team's current Grand Tour leader Primoz Roglic.
The signing of Roglic from Jumbo-Visma ahead of the 2024 season marked the start of a new era for Red Bull - BORA - hansgrohe. With more financial backing than ever before, the experienced Slovenian was supposed to be the man to take the team to the next level. Although Roglic did win the Vuelta a Espana in 2024, the five-time Grand Tour winner's performances at the other Grand Tours have somewhat disappointed.
At the biggest, most-watched bike race on the calendar, the pressure is on to perform for the title sponsors. After abandoning the 2024 Tour de France ahead of stage 13 following a number of crashes, Roglic could only manage an 8th placed finish at the 2025 edition, usurped by his younger German teammate Florian Lipowitz, who secured a podium finish alongside Tadej Pogacar and Jonas Vingegaard.
Add to those underwhelming performances a crash-plagued 2025 Giro d'Italia campaign that ended in another abandon, some have suggested the expected signing of Remco Evenepoel could be about to force Roglic out of Red Bull - BORA - hansgrohe, with there even being rumours the 35-year-old's contract could be set to expire.
According to team boss Ralph Denk though, the belief and backing of Roglic within Red Bull - BORA - hansgrohe remains absolute. “It’s not true that his contract is expiring,” Denk stated on a recent team podcast following the conclusion of the 2025 Tour de France. “We’ll speak after the Tour to discuss his goals and what motivates him."
Denk also insists Roglic and Red Bull are looking ahead to a shared future together. "He’s won practically everything in cycling, except the Tour de France and the Tour de Suisse. After that conversation, we’ll determine the next steps,” he explains.
With Roglic now confirmed to be returning to racing post-Tour de France at Clasica San Sebastian 2025, could an attempt to win a record-breaking 5th Vuelta a Espana be on the cards later this summer? “Jai Hindley, Giulio Pellizzari, Giovanni Aleotti..." Denk lists off the names already pencilled into Red Bull - BORA - hansgrohe's Vuelta lineup. "But nothing is final. We still have four weeks and a lot of racing ahead.”
