Victor Campenaerts played an important part in Arnaud De Lie's victory in the
Tour of Leuven today. The Belgian from
Lotto Dstny was together with his teammate in the leading group that was allowed to sprint for the win and saw De Lie finish his teammate's work.
On roads that hosted World Championships in 2021, Lotto Dstny controlled the race. "This circuit is a bit more fun than Glasgow, it's less hectic. As a team we knew we had to take control here, and we did that with verve," Campenaerts said confidently. "If I'm right, we're in the top 10 with four men, while we've had the race in our hands all along."
In the end, Campenaerts saw his teammate complete the teamwork in the sprint. "It's great to ride with Arnaud because you have such a chance to win. You just have to pace to keep things together and you are actually sure that you can put your hands in the air," he said with praise for his teammate.
De Lie and Campenaerts were part of a larger leading group, in which Jordy Bouts attacked and Axel Zingle started the sprint early. "That was perfect for us. That way I could stay ahead a little longer in the wake of the attackers. With Arnaud you know that if he is 50 meters behind, he can make up for it in the last 200 meters. It's nice to race like that."
